Cha:n offers traditional Korean food with a twist

I spent most of my childhood in Korea, and when I came to the U.S. over a decade ago to start college, I had a tough time adjusting to the American diet. I was used to (read: spoiled) having delicious, authentic Korean food all the time. 24/7. My mom was notorious for serving kimchi fried rice and OJ for breakfast in the morning. In grade school, I was the kid with a do-shi-rak (Korean bento box) full of stinky Korean food, sitting smack in the middle of PB&J-with-no-crust Johnny and bologna-with-mayo-on-white-bread Sally. Needless to say, no one ever offered to trade something in their lunchbox with me. Oh well, more for me! :)

Anyway, while the Seattle area does have a strong Korean community, most of the good restaurants and specialty stores are located a good drive away. So I was thrilled to hear a new Korean restaurant had recently opened downtown, literally steps away from my office at Pike Place Market. My bestie and fellow half-Korean Stacy (author of Does It Come With Bacon) and I immediately booked reservations.

My hair waffle

A friend of mine recently introduced me to The Waffler blog, authored by a lovely gal named Molly. The concept of the blog is genius: people submit their “waffles” and Molly’s readers cast votes to help them make a decision. Waffles in this case refers to style dilemmas and not the breakfast food.

So anyway, I submitted my hair waffle (to cut or to grow out) and it’s featured on the blog today. Help a sista’ out and cast your vote! Feel free to leave any helpful comments as well.

Wanted: The perfect running playlist

Happy Friday, my lovelies! I’m enlisting your help in creating the mostest awesomest running playlist to help me through my training and race day for the Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon.

My iPod mostly consists of the latest radio hits, but I’m looking for a good variety to mix it up a bit.  Motown hits, classic rock, R&B, hip-hop, oldies — all is fair game as long as it’s got a good beat to run to and makes me want to shake my tail-feather at the drop of the first note. :)

Good-bye City, Hello Suburbia

Long time no see! The month of March was a total blur. Between a trip to SF, an office move, a major team transition, 3 big work events, and a new home, I’m POOOOOOOOOOPED. Too pooped to even cook in my new ginourmous kitchen (blasphemy, I know!). All the while, I’ve been sustaining my body with kale smoothies, wasabi peas, coffee, Red Bull and skittles.

So I guess you’re wondering about the new home, yeah? After many years living in a shoe-box of an apartment in the city, I’ve moved into a house in the sub-….sub-….*gulp* SUBURBS! Ack, there I said it.

Latest adventures

I’ve been kicking myself in the butt for not taking advantage of the beautiful scenery and endless outdoor activities that our little corner of the map offers. I’ve been working every weekend for the past month and it really started to take a toll on me mentally. So I was looking for a way to unwind and recharge my batteries — and what better way to do so than out in the beautiful natural world.

The perfect, fool-proof poached egg

I love me a poached egg. One of my favorite go-to dishes is roasted asparagus topped with a poached egg and drizzled with a sweet balsamic vinegar. That said, I absolutely suck at poaching eggs — I always throw in several eggs and hope at least one will turn out.  And even then, the egg is hardly recognizable when I plate it.

Eat. Run. Hope

Laugh all you want, but I generally sign up for races based on these 3 important factors:

  1. Will there be food or alcohol waiting for me at the end? I thoroughly enjoyed the free donut at the finish line of the Top Pot 5K last year.
  2. Are crazy costumes encouraged? I look forward to sportin’ my giant Guinness hat and a homemade green tutu at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Dash.
  3. And most importantly, does the race benefit a worthy cause? The Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon I ran last summer benefited the American Cancer Society and I personally chose to raise funds for the Pike Place Market Foundation, one of the event’s charity partners.
