Lean mean green smoothie machine

I am not a morning person at all, and I need every bit of a fuel boost to get my day started. And I’ve found that magical potion in the form of a green smoothie.  Over the past year, I’ve experimented with different fruit and veggie combos and they’ve all been surprisingly delicious and filling. Extra bonus: Superfoods like kale and chia seeds provide a ton of nutritional benefits.

I prefer smoothies to juices because blending utilizes the whole produce — fibers and all — which keeps you full longer. In fact, green smoothies are a great meal replacement for those looking to shed some pounds. Gone are the days of fad diets!

Jenn’s Favorite Green Smoothie

Yields approx 24 fl oz

  • 8-10 oz cold water
  • 2 cups (tightly packed) chopped fresh greens. I like to use a combo of kale and spinach
  • 1.5 cups mixed frozen fruit
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 avocado
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 Tbsp ground chia or flax seeds
  • Optional: Honey
  • Optional: Protein powder (I like to use sunflower seed protein powder in mine)

Blend all ingredients in a blender until you get a smooth consistency. Serve in a chilled glass and enjoy!

I like to make a big batch at the beginning of the week and store it in a container in the fridge. Then each morning I blend a 12-oz serving with a few ice cubes.

Cost saving tip: Stock up on whatever fruit is on sale, cut them into bite-size chunks and freeze them in a large container. Right now I’m on a nectarine and blueberry fix.
