Recap: Greek Fest 2009

The St. Demetrios Greek Festival this weekend was just as lovely as last year, but the added bonus this time around was…SUNSHINE and warm weather!  This time last year, my friends and I were bundled in thick sweaters as we ventured from one food booth to another. Rather than rant on and on about how much fun we had, I’m going to let the following pictures speak for themselves:

Popcorn, caramel, corn on the cob…

…food I can enjoy again as I just got my braces off this morning! :)  I’m actually most excited to eat baby carrots without chopping them up into tiny bits. Oh the freedom!

Here’s a post-braces pic with the lovely gift from my orthodontist:

no more braces!

Eating Green

Earlier in the year, a co-worker introduced me to Full Circle Farm’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, and thus changed my life forever :)

A CSA program is essentially a partnership, if you will, between a “community” of urbanites (you and me) and local farms — people commit to supporting a farm through a membership, and in return, receive a “share” of the farm’s produce. It’s like getting a birthday present every time you open a box full of fresh, organic produce. There are several CSA programs throughout the U.S. – check out Local Harvest’s website to locate one near you (and also see how other people have rated them).

What I really love about Full Circle Farm’s CSA program is the flexibility and strong focus on customer satisfaction.  They have a very user-friendly website where members can modify their accounts and even swap out contents in their boxes before they are delivered. You get an email the weekend prior to your pick-up day that lists out the contents of the upcoming box — if there is something on the list that you’re not particularly fond of (i.e. icky cilantro), you can substitute it for something more to your liking (i.e. sweet, delicious blueberries :) ). Another wonderful perk — and what I’m most excited about — is the page of great recipes they include in your box each time. So if you get a veggie you’ve never tried before, you’ve got a trusty recipe already on hand. They also include tips on storing and prepping the produce so that you can get the most out of them.

Since joining the CSA program, I’ve been eating a lot healthier and have become more aware (and appreciative) of all the amazing fruits, veggies and herbs grown in our area. Yay for being healthy and supporting local farms!

Foodie Heaven

About a month ago, my co-worker Alison invited me to join her for a quick trip to Big John’s PFI, a family-owned Mediterranean grocery store nestled in the International District. Don’t let the small size and bland decor fool you — this place is a foodie’s dream come true!  My head was spinning as I took in my surroundings: bulk olives, gourmet cheese, specialty olive oils and vinegars, bulk spices and herbs, Italian meats, pasta and much, much, more. There are even aisles dedicated to Asian and Middle Eastern specialty foods.  Check out their website for detailed info on their products.

Since we were on our lunch break, I didn’t have nearly enough time to truly see everything this place has to offer, so I prioritized and focused my attention on the bulk section where I grabbed some polenta, quinoa, fine sea salt and coarse black pepper.

As if I didn’t already think the place was perfect, the employees were also simply amazing — super friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable in their products. The guy helping Alison in the bulk olive section took the time to walk her through their selection of Lebanese olives and helped her decide on the perfect combo for her brother-in-law’s birthday gift.

For you Seattlelites who enjoy cooking Mediterranean food, or even want to experiment with new ingredients and exotic flavors, a visit to Big John’s PFI is a must!
